Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the destruction of all official land records in the Recorder's Office, the abstracts of Chase Brothers & Co. (along with those of Shortall & Hoard and of Jones & Sellers) were leased to the firm of Handy, Simmons & Co., which soon was doing a booming business in title examinations. New abstract firms also appeared, but by 1901 consolidations had reduced the number again to three - which then merged to create the present Chicago Title and Trust Co.
